Great sushi. Fresh and creative. Thumbs up!

I should've reviewed Sushi Kushi Too a long time ago, since I've been coming here for awhile. Two things come to mind when I think of their food: perfect balance and comforting. I almost always have Kitsune Udon when I come here during the winter. This is thick noodles in a smoky broth with about 4 large sweet tofu pieces. This is comfort food. They give you a huge bowl of noodles for a pretty reasonable price. The flavors are delicate but satisfying. I almost always order an aac (avocado, asparagus, cucumber) roll as well. The rice is perfect every time. Again, no heavy-handed flavors here. I have to say I don't eat fish, but there's plenty here for non-fish eaters. Soups, a separate list of vegetarian rolls, appetizers, and vegetable tempura. I don't usually order tempura unless my son is with me, but I think their veggie tempura is exceptional in that they have, in addition to the standard broccoli & sweet potato, lovely, smokey shiitake mushrooms and snappy green beans. It's a bit cramped, but very clean with friendly service. One of my favorites!

Sushi was good, portions were small. Had the Chicago, Alaskan, Dragon and Red Dragon and Highland Park maki, all were good, but Red dragon was the best. Limited bur sufficient wine list. Reasonable prices. Atmosphere nothing fancy. Service was less than friendly but pretty efficient. I would come back if I was in the area and had a sushi craving, but wouldn't go out of my way to go here.

Fast and polite service, high quality food, and warm atmosphere. What more could you ask for? Sushi Kushi is the place to go for Japanese food. I was recommended to come here by a friend and I was not disappointed. I ordered the salmon bento box, and it came with miso soup, california rolls, vegetable tempura, salad, noodles, rice, potato, and the salmon of course. Great meal!

While there is unlimited green tea refills which are well brewed, and the staff is fast, nice, and happy to give you extra ginger with your sushi, the actual food was not up to (my) par. The pieces of my tool were a little triangular shape--an indication of not rolling the sushi well--and there was no texture or taste that jumped out at me. If I'm going to pay some good money for sushi, I'll be taking it elsewhere.
(3)Mike L.
Service was good. Food was not so impressive. Sushi wasn't up to par with the original Sushi Kushi. We're used to flavorful sushi, but two of the dishes were extremely bland, no taste.

Sushi Kushi Too is my favorite place to carry out Japanese food. They have a great variety of contemporary and classic Japanese dishes, with everything being prepared well. Their food is consistently good, which is why I keep ordering from here. I can always count on a satisfying lunch or dinner. Food is prepared quickly, staff is friendly, and their prices are very reasonable. The restaurant itself is a little small, so I often prefer to carry out; but it's nice to stop by and have the occasional lunch here. My close friends have also gotten hooked. We'll certainly be ordering from Sushi Kushi Too quite regularly.

I've been to Sushi Kushi Too a couple times now and have always been pleased with my experience. The place is quite small, and always packed from what I have seen, but rightfully so. The tuna carpaccio appetizer is the best I have had. Very light and lemony, not fish at all, with just the right blend of oil and tang. We also had the shumai and were not disappointed. The noodles are made fresh daily, and the Ramen Special was delicious. We were told this was NOT spicy compared to some other ramen choices, but it definitely was. Thankfully we were ok with that but I know some people can't handle the heat, so be careful. We have also tried the soft shell crab roll and deluxe sashimi specials, both highly recommended. They melt in your mouth and are always fresh with the perfect taste and consistency. The oysters are HUGE, but I wasn't a fan. I am more a fan of the beausoleil variety which are lighter and sweet, and these were quite briney and not pleasing to my palate, but my companion loved them. Luckily we had some junmai sake to wash it all down. Overall I have been very pleased and will definitely return when I am in the area. Prices are reasonable and quality is outstanding. I just wish the place was bigger since the wait can be quite long if you require a table for a group, or don't want to sit at the sushi bar.

Came here for ramen specifically while were in the area for the Highwood Pumpin Fest. I'm not sure about the sushi because we only ordered ramen, but for ramen this place is legit. The boy had their Taiwanese style ramen which has ground pork instead of the sliced pork, and also adds a little spicy kick to the broth. He really liked it and slurped it all up. I thought it was a little more oily for my taste, but I was super pleased with my regular ramen. We're from LA and we've both had ramen in Japan, so our standards are pretty high. This was really close to the real thing. The noodles had a good bite to it, and the serving size was good (I was super full and didn't have room for the delicious looking green tea ice cream afterward). Anyway, if you're looking for real Japanese tonkatsu ramen, make the drive out here and you will leave fat and happy :). I really wish there was a place like this in downtown Chicago!

This place was recommended to me by my boss, a big-time foodie and cook (he knows his sh*t). The quality of the food here is excellent. Very fresh fish. It's not designer/trendy sushi, but it is still prepared with a elegant style to it. Like any good sushi restaurant, you have to get the chef's selection or some combination of fresh fish to really evaluate their food. The portions are average, and the price is on-par for a high quality sushi place. I would definitely recommend this place to any looking for sushi in the North Shore. Try the avodcado salad - it is a bed of fresh tuna, layered with fresh avocado. it turns heads in the restaurant.

I used to work doors away from this place and I frequented quite often. Whether the office would order pick up or I'd grab a late dinner there with friends, I ate here once every other week. The sushi is fresh, the service prompt, and the presentation delightful. Pretty good value for the price you pay. While it's not the cheapest place out there - let's remember we're in the northshore, folks. Nothing in this area is truly cheap - this probably just adds to its bougie appeal. This place can get crowded during peak dinner time. Their outdoor dining area is very pleasant for feasting and people watching, especially during the summers! Beware on weekends if you're not into that "family" scene - you may just find yourself falling victim to the innocent 3 and 4 year olds who have successfully flung their food in your direction with their apt usage of chopsticks. They are also closed one weekday (either Monday or Tuesday - seems to depend on the season) so call ahead!

SERVICE AT THIS LOCATION IS TERRIBLE! What really stinks about this is that Sushi Kushi Toyo in Lake Forest is pretty great. I assume they are under the same ownership and I feel like my poor experience with one totally affects how I feel about the other. Get it? SK Too in Highland Park has GOOD SUSHI. Their SERVICE is HORRIBLE. Everything I ordered was fresh and tasty, no worries about their food quality or authenticity -and it is a pretty and clean place, even prettier than the original in the strip mall. This is one of those places where the waitstaff seems like they are actually pretending not to hear you! We had such a difficult time getting anything more after our initial order...it was an ordeal to get a few more sushi pieces, a big problem to order a Sprite for one of the kids after the initial drink order...and for a Saturday dinner, right at opening -they sure were out of a lot of stuff. They were both rude and indifferent. Though we ordered a good percentage of the menu and spent a good amount of loot...we were treated with disregard. Unfortunately this is how some places can act when they have cornered the market as they have with their quality of food. Thanks for the not so great service -we are sure you don't care if we ever come back. Sushi Kushi Too Rude. 1 star, I'd give you zero if I could.
(1)Hendrix B.
Here's all I can say to recommend this place - the sushi chefs are Japanese and they serve unfiltered sake. However, if you like bland, unimaginative rolls, not-so-fresh fish, over-the-top prices and your aging aunt's attic decor, this could be the ticket. I hate to say it but I've had better sushi prepackaged at Whole Foods.
(1)Greg H.
Pretty good. Pricey. Needs new menus.
(3)Chester W.
I really think this place is solid. I have had the rolls and various nigiri and its all been really good. Everything is fresh and everyone that works there is definitely Japanese.
(4)Annie C.
I just ordered take out from Sushi Kushi Too and it was actually pretty gross. The fish seemed very fishy, the rice was falling apart...something about the rolls just make me get the heebies. Yuck...will NOT be going back.
(1)Jennifer F.
I'd skip Sushi Kushi Too. I've been twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. I found the quality of the fish to be average at best. Our first visit was for dinner. The food was really nothing special. Prices are fair. The very small restaurant had 3 families with small children so it was a bit noisy. I gave it another try today, looking for somewhere different for lunch. I was disappointed in the lunch specials. Everything seemed very heavy, I wanted a couple rolls and some miso. There isn't a lunch special for rolls. I asked my waiter if they could substitute tofu or fish for the chicken/beef teriyaki in the bento box. He said he had to ask the chef, went back to the counter where he, the manager, and a waitress took turns giving me odd looks. He then proceeded to wait on another table before returning to tell me they wouldn't make any substitutions. I ordered a la carte. My food was really disappointing this time. The spicy tuna roll was more mayonnaise than tuna. The restaurant was packed for lunch and the tables are right on top of one another. It was physically impossible for me to get out from the banquette without bumping into one of my neighbors. (I'm a thin person.) Not very private for my quiet lunch out.
(2)Jessica O.
Ok the sushi is really quite tasty! Everything here was quite well made, and the place looks like your average sushi eatery. The reason for the 3 star review is the service. The place was incredibly busy and the waitstaff were definitely in the weeds. I myself was a waitress for many years and can understand this, however the mistakes made were pretty brutal. We ordered, and it took about 30 minutes for my rolls to come up, and and one of my rolls that I ordered was never delivered to the table. The lady that was waiting on us seemed annoyed when I asked for it. So the food was quite excellent, but I would personally go somewhere else if I wanted to be treated well for the money that I was spending.
(3)Michael W.
I actually do find the food to be pretty good however after a recent visit I had a unusually poor experience related to my credit card bill. Apparently SK erroniously overcharged me by submitting two seperate bills. after repeated phone calls to the restaurant they still were unable to resolve the issue. i had to call the credit card company to handle on my own.
(2)MJ D.
had lunch with friends yesterday. everything was fresh and delicious, especially the brittle tuna and spicy mushrooms! service was great too, which seems to be their main problem, but not this time!! so happy to have a neighborhood spot that is consistently good!!
(4)Diana P.
Good sushi, lots of options, great downtown HP location. This place is hit or miss sometimes. Once it's great, another time it's just ok but always edible. :). Lake Forest location is a better choice if you're in that area.
(4)Don S.
HORRIBLE service!!!! Crabby waitstaff does not care at all. We waited over an hour for sushi. The couple next to us waited 45 minutes for an appetizer. The appetizers are mediocre at best. It's hard to ruin edamame. The salad was watery. The sushi itself was sticky and chewy. I will not be coming back.
(1)Mingchao Z.
It made the top of my worst sushi list. Waited 1 hour for the food. Even half hour for a simple cold noodle. Service was not decent neither. Seriously will never go there again.
(1)Christine S.
The food was good, but one employee ruined the experience for me. Maybe he was the manager, he was wearing a dark green shirt instead of the lighter green everyone else was wearing. After we moved the table one foot to the right so we could sit more comfortably he was obviously upset and came to our table and word for word said "next time could you not move the tables?" (As if there would be a next time after that!) We had no idea it was such a big deal, they weren't even busy at the time. Later he bumped into my brother and did not even apologize. When we approached him about it afterward he was full of excuses. Needless to say, I'll be visiting one of the other locations from now on.
(1)Elina S.
The place had below par sushi for over the top prices. Some rolls were a little rice heavy and low fish content, while others like the spicy salmon and eel roll were not bad. The first time I went I had a worse experience, but this past time, it was a tad better making me think that I will be back since it's so close to work. I do think they need to lower their prices since the rolls are small. Just as any 3 star place, I would say it's A-OK. Not the best nor the worst I've ever had. Def. worth a try if you're in the area! In the summer, they have some outdoor seating which is always a plus for me!
(3)Peter S.
Went back for lunch carryout with a friend. Sticky overcooked sushi rice - she had a three roll combo of spicy tuna and two other spicy rolls. Not worth 15.00 just because it was large - it was mostly rice. I had four pieces of nigiri with a tuna roll that had 6 very small pieces. This also came to $15.00. All in all, there are a lot better things you can do at lunchtime with $15.00.
(1)Rachel S.
Pretty decent. Waitress was super nice. Sushi was ok. I got the highland park roll, alaskan roll, and california roll. Sake was on point... wasabi was super hot and spicy. I think the size of this place is just right. Its small and they look busy all the time. It is nothing special, there are better sushi places chicagoland area.

Full disclosure: I'm from Chicago but have lived in LA for the past 7 years, so I'm accustomed to above average sushi at the very worst, simply because of the general freshness of fish on the west coast. Sushi Kushi is a casual neighborhood joint in downtown Highland Park. It has an extensive menu of sushi, rolls, teriyaki, shish kabobs, hot and cold appetizers. Kudos to the broad menu and reasonable prices, particularly for sushi. But the quality is simply average. Not terrible but nothing great. On a recent night we had: Gomae Edamame (too watery, not salty enough) Spicy scallop roll inside out with wasabi tobiko (best roll of the night) Rainbow roll (usually my favorite, kind of bland) Fresh salmon and avocado roll (fine) Chicago roll (meh) This place is fine if you're looking for reasonably priced sushi. Though don't expect much.
(2)Scott C.
Stopped by Sushi Kushi Too for another lunch today and tried the Cubbie roll - deep fried spicy tuna with additional spicy mayo and wasabi mayo on top. I'll admit it is not the healthiest item on the menu - but it was very very good. Give it a try - or better yet split it up with friends so you don't feel like a total glutton! Otherwise - same great service and food here.
(3)Galia P.
The place is small and very crowded. But the sushi is the best! Fresh and tasty. Service is very fast. Definitely coming back there.
(4)Erik S.
For up here in Highland park, this place is solid. Ambiance is decent. Servers are eh, but the sushi chefs are very friendly. Sushi is decent for the price. The ramen here however, is fantastic. In particular, try the taiwan style - it is a solid meal on it's own. I have never had a bad meal here; at worst I've had an okay meal and at best I had a fantastic one.

I think the people who like this place hasn't had really good sushi. The best thing they have is the tuna brittle. I been here many times, but the last time I went, I took my kids and mom. My daughter ordered a rice dish. It came out long after the sushi even after I mention to the waitress that we were still waiting on it. When it came out, we were practically done with our dinner and my daughter had eaten a few pieces of sushi because she was so hungry. I went to the older gentleman at the register and explained the situation. I told him, I know it does not take 45 minutes to make a rice and chicken. I told him we were already done with our dinner and that I asked the waitress twice about my daughter's dish. I requested he take her meal off our bill since she did not touch it and based on my assumption, the waitress probably never placed the order with the kitchen. He would not budge. on a meal that was maybe $7. He said it takes about an hour for that dish. That was BS, considering I'm Asian myself and I know how long it takes to make it, maybe 15 minutes from start to finish, even with making the rice. My mom laughed when I told her he said it takes an hour. He would not take it off our $90 bill and I told him I would never returned. It's not smart to lose a customer over $7, for a mistake they made. I will never returned and if you explain to other sushi restaurants how the tuna brittle is, they can make it. I done many take outs from this place and though it's okay sushi, it's not the best. There are better, even across the street at Sushi Badaya.
(1)Elaine M.
This was our go to(o) place for sushi before the son started eating five or more rolls at a seating. The sushi here is the freshest and best in the north shore that we have found. The only problem is that you are going to pay for it. We have found the prices here to be higher than other places but certainly worth it. My favorites are the central roll - crab, asparagus, fish eggs with spicy mayo and topped with flakes, jalapeno mayo, and eel sauce and the moon river - shrimp, cucumber, tempura flakes, jalapeno mayo and eel sauce. I tried the pan fried noodles with shrimp and vegetables for the first time the other day and they were good but average compared with the sushi. The boy with the bottomless pit of a stomach gets as many spicy tuna rolls as we will allow so I would say that would be a ringing endorsement of those as well.
(4)Bryan B.
Very disappointing experience! !!!! Soggy wonton chips, old fish, and a poor arrogant owner. I say this because he was telling over the sushi bar instead of replace an item I politely requested be replaced. Food cost was about a dollar fifty for him. this place is not worth the money!!! Server tried her hardest, it was not her fault!!!
(2)Cat C.
Love this place. Really good Bento boxes they come with lots of stuff and taste really. Small cute place! Best sushi I'm highland park
(4)Jen C.
My friend took me to this place and claimed it had better ramen than even places he tried in New York! We had the tonkatsu ramen lunch set with fried rice and gyoza, and the Taiwan tonkatsu ramen. Everything was very tasty and after having their ramen, I'm definitely not going back to that ramen shop in Mitsuwa! Free parking is available on the street. On the downside, the place is quite small and it's hard getting around without bumping into other patrons.
(4)Allison M.
This is the best sushi in the area, even though it is a bit pricey... And even though if you're from somewhere with a real sushi market, this may not be the best you've ever had. BUT some of their rolls are a definite treat: try the shrimp lover roll, the red dragon, and the highland park roll. They're the best on the menu!
(4)Cindy C.
I used to love this place. It was my go to place for ramen but something happened here. It changed somehow. My husband and I used to deliberately come here for ramen but after today's visit I am probably never going back. The appetizers were great but the donkatsu ramen and Taiwan ramen were pretty bad. The broth was just too salty and didn't have the deep broth flavor. The Taiwanese ramen also had changed. The meat might not have been cooked because I could smell the pork. The broth was also salty and just sub par. We both did not finish the ramen. Other than the entrees, appetizer and service was good.
(2)G P.
Pretty good service and great food. Definitely try the teriyaki salmon, miso soup, and donburi!
(4)Jacob B.
Plainly and simply they changed. This was my favorite place to get any sort of sushi, but they seemed to stop serving it. They decided it would be a better business model to serve less sushi and charge more... I'm no economist, but I feel that's a wee bit unfair. Go back to the way you were, and I might consider coming back. It's quite unfortunate too because it used to be quite good.
(1)Paddu P.
Best: Carpaccio, Gommai, highland park roll! Authentic Japanese food. They have a huge menu that I've never ventured, because I love so much the things I've gotten thus far!
(5)Liz T.
Mixed reviews from Yelpers... I have no mixed review on this place. I've been here 2x now and both times have been fantastic. First impressions: walk in on a Tuesday night and the restaurant is packed. The atmosphere was cozy and a well kept restaurant. Very clean and organized. We sat down in about 5 minutes by a friendly host and brought water in about 1 min flat. The menu was quite large and had a lot of different options for drinks as well as traditional Japanese entrees and Sushi. The drinks were fairly priced and had both American beer and Japanese beer. I ordered the Yaki Soba with beef and my husband ordered the Tonkatsu. I asked for the red pickled ginger and Japanese mayo with my entrée and they had both! Impressive. Most places I order Yaki Soba they have no idea what I'm talking about let alone have both! And not look at me like I'm crazy ordering. Our food came out quickly and was excellent. The portions were very large and we had no room for dessert. This is my kind of Japanese place. It may not be for everyone, but I really love the cozy atmosphere, more traditional food, and reasonable prices. Attire was casual. Lots of families here.
(5)Alec H.
I have been going to here for years on and off. I've found that the sushi is consistent and they have a nice menu of non sushi Japanese dishes. The atmosphere is nice but can get loud depending on the crowd. It is a fun place that my family likes to go to. The meals can range from moderate to costly. All in all I would say that it is a place that is consistently good and you can have a meal at any price point.
(4)Evie H.
Oh how I wanted to give this place 4 stars like their counter part in Lake Forest. Unfortunately I just can't after my two trips here. I have to admit I came specifically to try their ramen and neither visit really satisfied me. First off, I don't know why, but they have a separate menu just for ramen which is fine, but they don't give you this menu! On both occasions I've had to specifically ask for it. So I had the Taiwanese Tonkatsu ramen which 1) tasted nothing like Taiwanese ramen as I've had the real thing in Taiwan multiple times 2) was spicy as hell (and Taiwanese ramen is not usually spicy) I don't recall the menu saying spicy either. Now this wouldn't be problematic because I actually like spicy foods and can take it pretty well...however, the soup literally burned my mouth and throat. So that made it rather difficult to eat and enjoy. It was so spicy that my companions started dumping ice water in to make it less so. Second visit. I realized okay, maybe we should stay away from the Taiwanese ramen. This time I had just the plain tonkatsu ramen since I figured you can't really mess it up. Luckily there was no surprise spice so it was much more pleasant to eat. But that was just it. It was a very plain bowl of ramen that's nothing like the real Japanese deal. The broth isn't well developed, the meat is at most average, and the egg seemed like it was just hard boiled and then thrown in. On the plus side, we had no problems getting seated right away and the service was decent. It's a pretty cute place too. Until I return and try an actual non-ramen entree, 3 stars will suffice for this Sushi Kushi location.
(3)Anastasia L.
Good sushi but , service takes so long, plastic bottles for soy sauce, design inside ok paper napkins, u think for prices they charge you can make linen napkins and table cloths make it nicer
(3)Matt A.
This place is good but the one in lake forest is WAAAAYYY!!! better. Worth the drive. The rolls at this one just look sloppier when they are made compared to the ones in lake forest and the guac always seems brown from here whereas it is never anything but fluorescent green at the Lake forest location. I think same owners so don't really understand why it is this way but hmmmmm. Honestly I could walk to the one in highland park but regularly do carry out from LF.
(3)Melissa F.
It's been five years, but time for some updates (five years!?!). I went here last night and ate outside with a friend. When we first got there, we were told there was a wait, and I usually am Not Here For That, but we had time on our hands and weren't super hungry, so it was fine. After we walked around for 15 minutes, we came back. Throughout this whole process, most of the people who work here are very obvious when it comes to showing how annoyed they are with people waiting around for tables. We had slow service outside - but we weren't in a hurry. The brittle hot tuna is smaller than it used to be but still tastes fine. Pretty noticeable downsizing though. And the Red Dragon roll was predictably good, in all its Americanized glory. This might seem like a small complaint, but if you get soda there, be prepared for flat stuff that tastes like it's been sitting at the back of the fridge for two months. I could easily go back here, but it's gone slightly downhill. Of course, people will still go, so they really have no reason to make it any better.
(3)Sarah Beth B.
I have only had takeout from here, but I've gotten it a bunch of times now, so I feel like I have a pretty good sense of the place. First of all, sometimes when you try to order takeout, the phone just rings and rings and rings, or it's busy for like, a solid hour. Do they not hang up well? I can't imagine they're THAT busy. On those nights, I eat something else. But when I DO manage to place my order, not bad! Now, I'm not a fan of the giant sushi rolls you see so many places -- I like my sushi nice and simple, with the occasional spicy tuna roll. The fish here is nice and fresh tasting, so it's definitely good enough to eat in non-roll form. I do wish the rice was a little more tightly packed-- they often seem to fall apart! and the weird omelet thing I love so much other places really just tastes like scrambled egg here. it's really good home-alone-on-a-saturday-night takeout food, but I wouldn't make it my go-to sushi date night location. It does have an excellent name, though, and for that I give it a full point.
(3)David K.
I carryout and my only complaint is the phone line is busy quite often and occasionally not answered. They do a great job at fair prices. All of the sushi is good and my kids love the edaname, tempura and chicken teriyaki appetizer (much better alone versus the dinner with weak noodle side). I go to Lake Forest location if I want to eat in the restaurant. It is the same food, but a larger, more comfortable atmosphere.
(5)Andrea R.
We decided to take advantage of grandma being in town (babysitter!) and enjoy a last minute date night. Abigail's was our first choice, but once discovering it would be an hour wait we opted to go elsewhere. Elsewhere ended up being Sushi Kushi Too. As we parked... Husband: "By the way, how many stars on Yelp does this place have?" Me: "3.5" Husband: "What? We're going to a 3.5 star restaurant on date ngiht?" Me: "Well it came highly recommended from friends." Unlike Abigail's we were able to get a table immediately here. There's a lot on the menu, but nothing really appealed to me. I was in the mood for special rolls, but none of them sounded great so I opted for an unagi hand roll, shrimp tempura roll and 2 pieces of tobiko instead. My husband went w/ one of the sushi dinners. I noticed a few people at nearby tables eating the ramen, which actually looked pretty good. I'd probably opt for that next time since the sushi didn't wow me. As we were paying the bill we discussed (as we often do) our Yelp rating. 3.5 stars...
(3)Marisa P.
The fish I had from here was so buttery and fresh. Normally at least one or two pieces are fishy, not at all here. The seaweed salad had just the right amount of sweetness to balance the vinegar. The rolls were traditional and did not veer too far off course with crazy sauces. As far as atmosphere it is a little sterile, but if you are looking for good fish stop here.

After sweating it out for a little while at the Taste of Highland Park, we decided a nice, air conditioned restaurant is where we wanted to eat dinner. We had originally decided on Tamales, but as we walked there, the unassuming sushi place next door that we'd never tried, caught my eye and I said, "let's try here instead." My first impression of the restaurant is that they had a lot of staff on for the night. At least three sushi chefs, plus a handful of servers. The restaurant isn't that large. The menu was pretty standard, a lot of their specialty maki consisted of something that had eel and/or eel sauce. We ordered three rolls, the Highland Park, the Highlander, and I think it was the Red Dragon (the menu that is shown online is not the same as the menu in the restaurant.) We also ordered four pieces of nigiri. The flavors on the rolls were good, and the filling-to-rice ratio was better than some other places we've tried. One thing I cannot stand is if there is too much rice. It kills the whole roll. What I did not like about our experience at Sushi Kushi Too, is as follows: 1. While the rice/filling ratio was good, the rolls were sloppy. They do not take any pride in presentation here. 2. For the amount of staff working that evening, service could've been more attentive. 3. There was a fruit fly hanging out near our sushi all night. This makes me question the cleanliness of the whole establishment. 4. Someone who works there's girlfriend was (seemingly) drunk and hanging out at the sushi bar all night, being generally loud and rude. 5. No background music. 6. Sushi were okay, nothing special. No crazy design , nothing special on taste but price are expensive nuts. I paid 70$ with tips for 3 rolls and edamame. Really!? Sushi everywhere will cost me max. 40$ so I never will be back again. Just don't like to overpay.

Sushi quality very good Service was good, around here above average. Price a bit expensive but in line with neighborhood.

Great sushi? The best! (and I worked at another sushi place for 4 years!) Kushi yaki? Excellent! But one huge reason why I love Sushi Kushi? Real, authentic, Japanese home cooking, and great prices too! Delicious yaki soba (pan friend noodles), don buri (rice bowl meals), and even oni giri (rice balls)! Japan doesn't live on sushi, they have other great food too, I'm so glad to have a place to get it! Staff is always super friendly. They are always really busy, and they have to work in a tight space, yet always fast and friendly! Just a couple tips: - PLEASE do not ask for Chinese food here..... or any Japanese restaurant for that matter. There is no beef with broccoli, egg rolls, or sweet and sour chicken. Scoot yourself to Panda Express for that. - DO NOT stick your chopsticks in your food and leave them sitting up straight. It's considered bad luck (like incense sticks at a funeral.) - The soda with the marble is called Ramune. It's not 'Japanese Sprite'. It tastes like bubblegum, nothing like Sprite. - Tell the staff how much you like everything! It's a really tough neighborhood to cater to, show them some love!

I cant say I was at all impressed. I will preface this by saying im fairly picky about sushi so I will divide my review into service/food. Service was very slow. I think overall I waited for just under an hour for my sushi. The other person in my party received there plate of food and was finished for atleast 20 minutes before my food even came out. No real explanation as to why it took so long either, they weren't a full house and they had 3 guys behind the sushi bar. The waitress was mediocre overall The food was just ok. I ordered some individual pieces of sushi and the red dragon roll. The red dragon roll was pretty good. The shrimp was crunchy and there wasn't a ton of sauce just poured over it and the presentation was nice. My complaint was the rice but I will come back to that. The food really went down hill with individual pieces of sushi. When I order tuna, salmon, etc as individual pieces I expect the fish to be cold, have a somewhat firm texture, and the rice needs to be made properly otherwise the whole thing sucks. The fish was all warm, and didn't have a lot of texture. The rice......well the rice on every piece we had was pretty crappy. The rice was hard and didn't compliment well, had no rice wine vinegar in it either. $50.00 for a bowl of noodles, a roll, and some individual pieces. I think I can do better for the price/quality/service.

Get the Bento Box for lunch, It's under $10 - A deal in my mind and I counted 6 items (sticky brown rice, seaweed salad, fried shrimp and veggie, beef teriyaki, steam veggy and spicy tuna roll) and unlimited ice cold water. Plenty of seating outdoor with a spectacular view of downtown Highland Park and of course, free parking.

Was there last night with some friends. Service was swift and friendly. Felt warm and cozy, lots of families, not too loud. Yasai soba was so hot and delicious. Everything tasted fresh and was good, but I do like the menu at the VH location better.

I think I found the best ramen noodles in the northern suburbs here. Went here on a recent Saturday night with my wife, jonesing for some ramen. Voila! They had Taiwan Style Ramen on the menu. Nice big pieces of pork, delicious and perfectly cooked ramen noodles, and a great broth. It's on par, but different, from the ramen you get in the food court at Mitsuwa. Great sushi here too. Great menu...lots to choose from, including some entrees I haven't seen at other Japanese restaurants, and I've been to quite a few. Service is friendly. A bit of a wait on weekend nights, but that's testament to the oishii eats here. Located in downtown Highland Park. Street parking on a weekend night is a bit of challenge, but there's a large lot east of the restaurant about two and half blocks away.
(4)Travis O.
Good place and best in downtown Highland Park, which is to say its better than Sushi Badaya. Neither are spectacular, but the size of the rolls are larger, a bit fresher and a bit tastier at Sushi Kushi. Staff is friendly and quick to serve. Place is small so not good for large groups. I typically sit at the sushi bar at lunch as there are only a few tables.

Great Sushi. Huge menu. Good service...very authentic!!

I have been frequenting Arthur and the staff at SKT for over 10 years. If you want the freshest in Ahi, Mirugai, Hamachi, Uni and the like, this is the place. Toro, the best of the tuna is usually available. First come, first serve. He even carries things that are not on the menu and available to the few who know to ask for them. Aji...a wonderful and scarce little fish is wonderfully prepared with shaved ginger and a special sauce. Have you ever heard of Sasadango? It is a desert item that few have ever tried. Bamboo leaves surrounding a not too sweet pod of red bean ice cream. Truly and acquired taste, yet one worth trying if your lucky enough to find it. It comes from Japan and is wrapped in the leaf with Bamboo string ties at each end. Arthur takes great pride in his work and the staff is very helpful. FYI- I come from Florida and have owned my own fishing boat. I catch Tuna and all the salt water species. When I say it is fresh...believe me. I am there once a week, so give it a try. Ivan

Sushi Kushi Too is a comfortable, neighborhood sushi restaurant offering quality at a fair price (given that it is located in downtown Highland Park). My sister introduced me to this place as she works up the road at Fort Sheridan, and we've eaten here on many occasions over the past few years. The atmosphere and decor is sort of a contemporary Asian motif, with the long sushi bar dominating the room and space for a few tables. Upon walking in you might think it is trendy but the food is really more traditional. Ramen noodles here are a good choice for a lunch meal if you don't want sushi, but I think you'll want to at least try some of the rolls. I like the Central Roll best but all of them are beautifully assembled and presented, and most importantly, are delicious. The only nitpick I have here is that there sometimes is a heavy hand on the sauce they use to dress the rolls. Fish is standard in terms of portion size and freshness. I tend to prefer sashimi these days over nigiri but both are recommended here. Service is inconsistent, usually attentive but sometimes slow, especially on busy Fridays and Saturdays. It's best to arrive early because once the crush hits, it stays crowded until the later hours. Sushi Kushi Too is on my recommendation list.
(3)Tim T.
It is hard to find a good sushi place in Midwest. I give it a 4, because it is one of the good ones I find in Chicago. The Sushi taste fresh in Chicago. The servers provide good services. It is small and cozy, a nice place to hang out and chat with friends.
(4)Adam B.
I work up here in HP, and Sushi Kushi is close and although they can get quite crowded at lunch, they know I teach and need to get back to work and are quick. I usually get sushi here, which although can be a bit pricey, is always excellent. They have some interesting and tasty rolls as well if ya don't mind dropping $15 for roll. Today, I had their special which was not sushi, but a Japanese meal which was huge and extremely tasty, with lots of variety. Shrimp and Veggie Tempura over some rice with an addicting sauce, big bowl of soup with Udon noodles, salad with ginger dressing, little scoop of cold, tasty mashed potatolike item, cruncy cold veggie dish and this little side of chicken with another addicting sauce. And it was about $8 which goes way against the priciness (sp?) mentioned earlier in regards to the sushi. The problem was that I ate so much that I started dozing off at the board while trying to teach quadratic equations!!

(5)Mikey J.
Great meal!
(4)Katherine S.
(2)Peter S.

(4)Bridget M.
(5)Allison M.

6. Servers complaining about their tips right in front of us. I cannot say that I'll be back. Mark another failed sushi attempt off in Highland Park for me. Sad.

(5)Diana P.
(1)Elina K.

Great Sushi. Huge menu. Good service...very authentic!!
(5)Elina S.

(4)Barbara H.

Great sushi. Fresh and creative. Thumbs up!

Was there last night with some friends. Service was swift and friendly. Felt warm and cozy, lots of families, not too loud. Yasai soba was so hot and delicious. Everything tasted fresh and was good, but I do like the menu at the VH location better.
(4)MJ D.
had lunch with friends yesterday. everything was fresh and delicious, especially the brittle tuna and spicy mushrooms! service was great too, which seems to be their main problem, but not this time!! so happy to have a neighborhood spot that is consistently good!!
(4)Tim T.
(5)Paddu P.
Best: Carpaccio, Gommai, highland park roll! Authentic Japanese food. They have a huge menu that I've never ventured, because I love so much the things I've gotten thus far!

(3)Cindy C.

(4)Christine S.
(1)Elina K.
(3)Peter S.
(5)Dave J.
(4)Bob P.

6. Servers complaining about their tips right in front of us. I cannot say that I'll be back. Mark another failed sushi attempt off in Highland Park for me. Sad.
(3)Pavel Z.
Sushi were okay, nothing special. No crazy design , nothing special on taste but price are expensive nuts. I paid 70$ with tips for 3 rolls and edamame. Really!? Sushi everywhere will cost me max. 40$ so I never will be back again. Just don't like to overpay.

Good sushi but , service takes so long, plastic bottles for soy sauce, design inside ok paper napkins, u think for prices they charge you can make linen napkins and table cloths make it nicer

Good sushi, lots of options, great downtown HP location. This place is hit or miss sometimes. Once it's great, another time it's just ok but always edible. :). Lake Forest location is a better choice if you're in that area.

One word: Bugs Little tiny bugs crawling out from underneath the dishes, across the table, in the soy sauce. We we so looking forward to trying this place and now we will never, ever, not in a million years go back.

Great sushi. Fresh and creative. Thumbs up!

Ivan

Best sushi in Lake Forest/Highwood that I have found....

Apparently SK erroniously overcharged me by submitting two seperate bills. after repeated phone calls to the restaurant they still were unable to resolve the issue. i had to call the credit card company to handle on my own.

had lunch with friends yesterday. everything was fresh and delicious, especially the brittle tuna and spicy mushrooms! service was great too, which seems to be their main problem, but not this time!! so happy to have a neighborhood spot that is consistently good!!
(4)Tim T.
(5)Jen C.

(5)Alex C.
There are a number of Sushi Kushi places in the north suburbs of chicago. This one is tiny compared to the one in lake forest. Waits can be long on weekends. Rolls here are OK, nothing special and are a bit on the pricey side. The entrees are ok as well, again nothing to speak of. The sauces tend to be a bit strong and overpowering. Service was efficient and a bit cold. Inside its so cramped that its really hectic. For some reason I feel like the quality and service at the other locations is better.
(2)Adam H.
Sushi quality very good Service was good, around here above average. Price a bit expensive but in line with neighborhood.
(4)Mike L.
Service was good. Food was not so impressive. Sushi wasn't up to par with the original Sushi Kushi. We're used to flavorful sushi, but two of the dishes were extremely bland, no taste.
(2)PJ J.

Was there last night with some friends. Service was swift and friendly. Felt warm and cozy, lots of families, not too loud. Yasai soba was so hot and delicious. Everything tasted fresh and was good, but I do like the menu at the VH location better.
